Loved this article and totally agree. Often wished my ex-husband who had a master's in theatre had taken shop class because he could barely screw a lightbulb in. I probably should've taken it too cause I hate paying repair people but they are so necessary in life. My dad, on the other hand, who went to Lane Tech just like you, now, he knew what to do with the tools and had a good career as a mechanic. We do a big disservice only promoting college. A friend of mine and her hubby never went to college and they are millionaires now whereas I with a master's degree will be working till I die probably. Hats off to shop class!!

I have only four remaining metal shop projects as mementos of my high school years. One of them is a C-clamp. It was threaded on a machine lathe, and hand-tapped. The dimensions are: 2 1/2 in. high X 1 1/2 in. wide X 1/2 in. thick. I still recall the cobalt-blue ink used to prep the raw block of steel. The dried ink allowed for the surface to be outlined with a tool called a metal scribe. Many blue drips of ink cascaded down the side of the ink's container.
